A great final day in British Columbia

My final day in British Columbia was a special one. We took a five hour ride on the Misty Isles sailboat throughout the islands of Desolation Sound. The highlight came quickly as a humpback whale surfaced about forty feet in front of the boat. A couple of other boats were in the area and we all cut our motors to watch the magnificent beast. The large whale came up several more times and then finally took in a big gulp […]

A beautiful end to the day in British Columbia

The people of Cortes Island live close to nature and appreciate the beauty that surrounds them. They are big into recycling and reusing, to the point that they have a Free Store at the recycling center that is staffed by volunteers. If you don’t need something, drop it off and it will be sorted and somebody else can take it for free. It is a great idea but I think it takes a special place for it to work. We […]

Walking the trails on Cortes Island

With the beauty that is contained on British Columbia’s Cortes Island the best way to really see it is to go for a hike or paddle around in a kayak. Today we did a hike to Hank’s Beach, which has a little bluff with a great view of surrounding islands. Whale of a sunrise in British Columbia

This morning I got up very early since I was still on east coast time. I went down to the beach on Cortes Island in British Columbia well before the sun came up, light was just starting to fill the sky. There were a few clouds to the east and as the sun got closer to coming over the horizon, the clouds caught the sunlight and created spectacular colors. It started with blue and went to red, the pink and […]

Viewing the dark sky of British Columbia

I love being in places that have dark skies and I hoped British Columbia’s Cortes Island wound be one, and it is. I wanted a shot of the Milky Way, which was to the south when I went out. Also to the south is civilization, which creates lots of light. I shot some photos to the north and all you could see was stars, which is pretty cool, but I like this shot with the Milky Way overhead and the […]

Visiting my sister in British Columbia

My sister Lynda and her husband Bill have built a great house on Cortes Island in British Columbia along the Pacific coast in a group of islands just east of the large Vancouver Island. I took a floatplane from Vancouver and landed at a nearby public dock. The ride was pretty neat, the Dehavilland Beaver, built in the 1950’s, made a couple of stops to drop off passengers at other islands nearby. I was a bit concerned when I got […]
