Building a Strong Photography Foundation Workshop

There are some essential skills that you must master before you will get consistently good photographs every time you go out to shoot. In this seminar, I will help you create a strong foundation from which you’ll be able to get the shots you want and enjoy taking pictures even more. I will help you understand all the elements of your camera, what you can control on your camera, which settings you should use and which ones are just there creating confusion.

Can you learn everything you need to know in one sitting? No, and your head would be spinning if we even tried. So we’ll take it one step at a time and make sure you understand what you are doing before moving on.

The day will start in the classroom and then we head outside where we practice what we learned. Then back to the classroom for more learning and back out to shoot and get a feel for what you learned. That’s how the day goes, you’ll learn by doing and getting feedback.

You will get plenty of written instruction and personal attention. Plus I’m buying pizza for lunch.

The workshop is based at my third floor studio in downtown Somerville. We’ll be heading outside several times to do our photo exercises so we’ll also get plenty of leg workouts climbing the stairs!

Some topics we’ll cover:

  • How to set up your camera (yes, there specific settings you want to change to make your camera perform better)
  • Photography terminology
  • Properly holding the camera
  • The exposure triangle: ISO, shutter speed and aperture
  • Understanding the light meter settings
  • File size settings
  • How to focus and which focus setting to use
  • Basics of composition

This is a fun, light-hearted seminar filled with personal attention. Bring your camera, your user manual, make sure your battery is charged and get ready to enjoy a new level of fun with photography!

It is recommended that you have a digital camera that allows you to change the exposure settings. You will have a fun, simple homework assignment before the class to make sure you are familiar with your camera.

Sign up now so you can understand how your camera works and why your pictures don’t always turn out the way you want.
