When stuck indoors due to Covid or weather, a great way to expand your photography skills is perfecting a technique. Since photography is all about the capturing of light, mastering indoor light painting is a fun way to learn new skills or brush up on old ones. Being able to make an interesting photo of simple things becomes much easier when the lighting is great. Light painting is easy to do once you understand the technique and do it a few times.
There are a couple of definitions of light painting, what I’m talking about is using a small, cheap flashlight to illuminate objects, rooms or people. In this workshop we won’t be doing the light painting where you have the light source in the image, like using sparklers or writing your name with the light (stay tuned for that!).
In this workshop we’ll have online classroom sessions where you learn the techniques and see photos I have made. Then you’ll have assignments to light different things and make unique photos. What you photograph is up to you, but I’ll give you suggestions along the way. You’ll send me some photos and we’ll look at them in class and discuss what works and what might be done to make then better. You’ll get lots of feedback and see the work of other students. Each session will offer new challenges for you.
For the workshop all you need is your camera, a tripod, a small flashlight, a little aluminum foil and a room you can get mostly dark. You can get fancy and add some colors to your flashlight using cheap cellophane or photography gels, but you don’t have to.
Three online sessions: Jan. 12, Jan. 26, Feb. 9 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. EST. You’ll get a Zoom link after you register. Each session will be recorded so you can review whenever you like or catch up on a session you miss.
