There is something special about lighthouses on the Maine coast and making photos there is always a great thing to do. Join professional photographer Loren Fisher for an exciting weekend sprint to photograph the beauty that only Maine provides.
We’ll photograph about 10 lighthouses during our three days together. You can drive your own car or travel in Loren’s 12 passenger Sprinter van and see the most scenic lighthouses from the southern coast all the way up to Rockland.
You can join the tour at one of four locations: Bridgewater, NJ, train station; Danbury, CT, train station; Hartford, CT, Union Station or North Billerica train station near Lowell, MA, north of Boston. Or meet us in Portland. You’ll get full details after you register but we’ll leave New Jersey at 7:00 a.m. and make stops along the way. We’ll be back in New Jersey Sunday night around 7:00 p.m.
Transportation and two nights of single occupancy lodging are included. The first night we will stay in the Portland area and the second night in Rockland. There will be a good deal of driving but lots of excellent photo opportunities. Don’t plan on this being a time to sleep, unless you can do it while riding.
On Friday, Sept. 25, we’ll drive to Portland, get our hotel rooms and head right out and shoot two lighthouses nearby. Then we’ll go to one of the most scenic lighthouses anywhere, Nubble, where we’ll catch the setting sun, blue hour.
Saturday morning we are up before the sun and go over to the most photographed lighthouse anywhere, Portland Head. We’ll shoot the early morning light and then go back to the hotel for breakfast, pack up and head north. We’ll stop at lighthouses on our way up the coast with our final destination being Rockland. The nearby Marshall Point Lighthouse will provide a great scene at the end of the day with evening light. This is where Forrest Gump ended his cross country run!
Sunday morning we are up again before sunrise and shooting the beautiful Rockland harbor and Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse as the sun comes up. We’ll go back to the hotel for breakfast and then start our drive home but the shooting isn’t done. We’ll stop at Pemaquid Lighthouse, another Maine icon.
Who should attend:
Your photographic experience doesn’t matter, even if you shoot entirely with an iPhone you’ll come away with amazing photos. If you would like to have professional photography instruction, Loren will be there to assist you. While the van will get you as close to all shooting locations as possible, there will some walking each day.
For photo equipment you’ll want a wide angle lens and a telephoto as a minimum; a wide angle to telephoto zoom is great to have. You can leave things in the van while you are out at specific locations but you are better off using a small bag or backpack and have your lenses with you. You never know what you will see. A sturdy tripod is a must for dusk shots. Loren will be shooting with a tripod the entire time. You might want a polarizing filter but you really won’t need any special filters but be sure to have plenty of memory cards and batteries. There will be an inverter in the van so if you bring a battery charger we can probably keep your batteries going.
This is September in Maine so it may get chilly, especially in the evening and early morning. Bring plenty of layers to keep warm, you can leave extra ones in the van. Don’t forget gloves, if your hands get cold you won’t want to shoot much. We’ll be shooting even if we have rain, so be prepared.
