The leaves were off the trees and the day was rather gray as I hiked through the Sourland Mountains in N.J. I came upon this group of phragmites, which are plants that grow in wet areas that have been disturbed by man. Phragmites in the summer have large, white fluffy ends and grow over eight feet tall. But in the autumn they turn a warmer tone and as the light hit these just right, they had a glowing feeling that nicely contrasts the bare trees behind them.
