Spring in Florida is a special time of year, for people and also for wildlife. Birds are thinking about love more than food and they exhibit breeding plumage that generates wild colors. Their focus is on finding a mate, so it a great opportunity for us to get a close view of them while they aren’t as concerned about people. This workshop/photo tour will put you in a position to get unique bird photos along with the beauty of the Florida Gulf coast. We will be in locations where you only need a 200mm lens to get great birds photos, of course a longer lens is more fun, but I’ll get to that later.

We will start and end our adventure in Orlando, where we will go to one of the most exciting and easy to access rookery breeding grounds in all of the U.S. After Orlando, we will work our way south ending at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island near Ft. Meyers. Later in the week we head back north to the Tampa area and then back to Orlando. We will be photographing mostly in natural areas along the coast and in parks and refuges.
Long-time professional photographer Loren Fisher will take you to places to great photos: landscapes, ocean scenes or wildlife. The experience is designed to improve your photography skills while photographing Florida’s beauty. Loren will give you personal attention and show you how to take your photography to a higher level, whether you are a beginner or experienced photographer. You will learn about light, composition and seeing angles and perspectives. Loren will share with you his planning, thought process while shooting and how he edits. We will meet for classroom instruction on Sunday evening and spend the week shooting in the field at unique locations. We will do our traveling at mid-day, when the light isn’t ideal for photography. On Friday morning we will look at photos you have made during the week and you will get feedback that you can use to create better photos once you get home.
Since the best light of the day is early and late, we will be out shooting before sunrise (around 7:37 a.m.) and get done each day after sunset. They will be action packed days and we will be on the go but also take the time to get the shots we want at each special location Loren has found.
Where: Starting and ending in Orlando, Florida
When: Starting Sunday, March 15, 2015 at 6 p.m. through Friday, March 20 at noon.
Who should attend: Any photographer wanting to improve his/her photographic skills through classroom and field instruction from a seasoned professional photographer while enjoying the beauty of Florida and access to birds in breeding plumage. You will receive feedback and pointers while shooting and a gentle critique of what you shot during a classroom session on the last day.
Maximum group size: 7
Equipment needed: A digital SLR camera (and your owners manual if you don’t know what all the buttons do) and a sturdy tripod is recommended. For bird photography, you should have a 200mm lens or longer. If you don’t have a bigger lens, you might consider renting one (the photos on this page were shot with a 200mm or 200mm with 2X teleconverter). Most locations require very little walking, so don’t leave gear at home. Optional equipment: remote release cable for your camera; polarizing filter; rain protection (you never know), hiking boots (we won’t be doing any serious hiking but we will be on short trails and in fields that may be uneven or wet) and whatever footwear you like on the beach.
Lodging: We will be staying in quality three and four star hotels. Pricing is based on double occupancy, if you prefer single occupancy, there is a $350.00 extra fee.
Meals: You are responsible for meals. Breakfast may be provided some hotels although we may be out shooting before serving begins. Since we will be shooting sunrises and sunsets, we may not have time for fancy sit-down meals.
Transportation: You get to Orlando, we’ll take care of the rest. We will all travel in one large van, there will be room for luggage and equipment.
Payment: The full fee is required 60 days prior to the workshop.
Deposits and Cancellations:
A $250 deposit must be paid in order to secure your space in our workshop. Full payment must be received 60 days prior to the workshop.
I must receive notice of your cancellation in writing, at which time we offer the following refunds:
60 days or more before workshop: Full workshop or deposit refund.
59 to 45 days before workshop: 50% of workshop cost.
44 or fewer days before workshop: no refund. If you must forfeit your workshop fee we will refund your full payment, minus the deposit, if I can fill your spot. I will also issue you a credit to be used on another workshop within the next year.
No partial refunds are made for unused portions or services of a workshop. Workshops are sold as a package only.
If a workshop is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of any money paid, but I’d have to be on my deathbed before I’d cancel.
